Meta video ads in the Andromeda era: what actually works in 2026

Meta’s Andromeda retrieval engine picks which ads get a chance to show, and creative now does the targeting. What that means for your video ads, how many to run and how to tell if they work.

The short answer

Andromeda is the system Meta uses to shortlist which ads can enter each auction. It matches ads to people mostly through the creative itself, so video ads work best when you run several clearly different concepts, built vertical for Reels, with a fast hook, sound and captions, inside broad audiences and Advantage+ settings.

Key takeaways
  • Andromeda narrows tens of millions of ads to a few thousand per person, and Meta says it improved ads quality by 8% (Meta, March 2025).
  • Meta’s own guidance: the best lever has shifted from niche targeting to creative diversification.
  • Different means a different concept, angle or format. Five near-identical cuts of one video count as one idea.
  • Build for 9:16 with sound and captions, and keep text out of the top 14% and bottom 35% of the frame.

What is Meta Andromeda and why does it change video ads?

Every time someone opens Facebook or Instagram, Meta has to decide which ad to show. It does this in stages. The first stage, called retrieval, cuts a huge pool of eligible ads down to a short list. Later models rank that short list and pick the winner.

Andromeda is the retrieval engine Meta rolled out starting in 2024. It is much bigger and more personalized than what came before. It looks at the ad itself, including the visuals, the message and the format, and predicts who it fits.

Here is why that matters for you. If your ad does not make the short list, it never reaches the auction. And the short list is built around what your creative says and shows. A video about saving time on payroll gets matched to different people than a video about avoiding IRS penalties, even inside the same broad audience.

Do you still need audience targeting on Meta?

Much less than before. In April 2025 Meta wrote that the focus “has shifted from niche targeting to creative diversification as the best lever.” In practice, most small businesses do better with broad targeting, Advantage+ audience and Advantage+ placements, then let the videos tell Meta who they are for.

Keep the hard limits that are true for your business. A roofer in Dallas still needs a location radius. A brand that only ships to the US still sets the country. What you can usually drop is the stack of interests you used to guess at.

What kind of video ads work best on Meta now?

There is no single winning format. What works is a mix of clearly different ideas, so Andromeda has real options to match to different people. These are the concepts we see small businesses rotate most often.

What makes a video “different enough”?

Meta warns that when ads look too similar, it may deliver them to the same people, which limits reach and can trigger a Creative limited or Creative fatigue status in Ads Manager. Changing the font color or swapping one line of text does not create a new idea. Change at least one of these:

  • The concept: testimonial vs. demo vs. founder story.
  • The angle: saves money vs. saves time vs. lowers risk.
  • The persona: who the video speaks to, and who appears in it.
  • The format: talking head, screen recording, b-roll with voiceover, or static image.
  • The setting: in the shop, on a job site, at a customer’s home.

How many video ads should you run per ad set?

Meta used to suggest no more than six ads per ad set. That advice has been dropped, and practitioners such as Jon Loomer now run far more. For Advantage+ sales campaigns, Meta itself has suggested keeping at least 20 diversified ads live.

For a small budget, that can be too many. Each ad needs some spend to prove itself. A practical rule is to start with 4 to 8 genuinely different videos per ad set and add more as your budget grows. Distinct ideas matter more than raw count.

What specs should Meta video ads use?

Most attention is on Reels and Stories, which are full-screen vertical. Shoot vertical first, then adapt for Feed.

SettingReels and StoriesFeed
Aspect ratio9:164:5
Recommended resolution1440 x 2560 px1440 x 1800 px
File typeMP4 or MOVMP4, MOV or GIF
Max file size4 GB4 GB

For Instagram Reels, Meta suggests leaving at least 14% of the top, 35% of the bottom and 6% on each side free of text and logos, because the app’s buttons and captions cover those areas. Use original audio or tracks from the Meta Sound Collection rather than licensed music.

How to build a video creative system that keeps up

Andromeda rewards steady output more than one big shoot a year. Meta’s own advice is to launch new ads regularly, with top advertisers doing it weekly. Here is a simple process a small team can run.

  1. 1List your 3 to 5 core customer types and the main reason each one buys.
  2. 2For each type, write two angles: the pain they want gone and the result they want.
  3. 3Shoot raw footage in batches: customer clips, job or product footage, and the owner talking to camera. A recent phone is enough.
  4. 4Edit each angle into a 15 to 30 second vertical video with a hook in the first seconds, captions and a clear call to action.
  5. 5Launch the new videos into your existing broad ad set instead of starting a new campaign each time.
  6. 6Review results every week. Keep winners running, turn off clear losers, and write next week’s brief from what worked.

Meta’s generative AI tools in Advantage+ creative can add variations, such as new backgrounds or text options. They help with volume, but they do not replace new concepts. Use them on top of real footage, and check every variation before it goes live.

How do you know if a Meta video ad is working?

Judge every video by the business result first: cost per lead, cost per booked call or cost per purchase. Then use the attention metrics to understand why a video wins or loses.

MetricHow to read itIf it is weak
Hook rate (3-second views ÷ impressions)Does the opening stop the scroll?Change the first 2 seconds
Hold rate (ThruPlays ÷ impressions)Do people keep watching?Cut slow parts, move the point earlier
Link click-through rateDoes the video create intent?Make the offer and next step clearer
Cost per resultDoes it make money?Check the landing page and the offer, not only the ad

Give each new video enough spend to get past the learning phase before you judge it. And make sure your tracking is solid. If Meta cannot see your conversions, through the Pixel and the Conversions API, Andromeda cannot learn which videos reach buyers.

Common mistakes with Meta video ads in 2026

  • Uploading ten cuts of the same video and calling it testing.
  • Splitting budget across many tiny ad sets, so no ad gets enough data.
  • Reusing horizontal TV-style footage with black bars in Reels.
  • Putting the key message where the Reels interface covers it.
  • Killing a video after one day because the first results look high.
  • Spending on new creative while the landing page still loses most visitors.

Frequently asked questions

It is the first step of Meta’s ad delivery. Andromeda picks a few thousand ads that could fit each person out of tens of millions, and later models choose the final ad. It relies heavily on the content of each ad to make that match.

Mostly, yes, for interests and lookalikes. Meta says creative diversification is now the best lever. Keep real limits like location, age rules for your industry and the countries you serve.

Reels ads can run much longer, but most small businesses do well with 15 to 30 seconds. What matters most is a strong opening in the first seconds and one clear message.

Start with 4 to 8 clearly different videos per ad set on a small budget. Meta suggests at least 20 diversified ads in Advantage+ sales campaigns once budget allows.

Not usually. Phone footage of real customers, real work and the owner talking often performs well on Reels. Good lighting, clear audio and captions matter more than expensive gear.
